Apr 20, 2011 · Visually, as Bob noted, then by counting the teeth on the second speed gear. Wide ratio is 31 teeth, close ratio is 28 teeth. You can also visually identify wide vs close by looking at the input shaft gear. If the gear is larger in diameter than the synchro dog teeth, it's a close ratio, if the dog teeth are larger than the gear, it's a wide ratio.
