Hakone Jinja Shrine

This shrine was founded in 757 by Priest Mangan according to an oracle from the deity Hakone Omikami. As a general shrine for Kanto, this famous shrine has been patronized by many military commanders and travelers on the Tokaido route over the years. The spacious precincts are surrounded by abundant nature, including Lake Ashinoko down below, the shrine road lined with towering old Sugi trees, and monoculture stands of Tall Stewartia trees that are a designated monument of Kanagawa Prefecture. The Treasure Hall exhibits many Important Cultural Properties including a statue of Priest Mangan and artifacts that tell of??Hakone Jinja Shrine’s over 1,253 years of history.
